Human Factors / Usability in patient safety

Dr. James (Jay) Duhig, Ph.D., is director of Patient Integration at AbbVie. He has expertise in human factors, health literacy, risk communication and the development of drug and device instructional materials for patients and healthcare professionals.

In his role with AbbVie Patient Safety, Dr. Duhig works with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, safety scientists, data scientists, engineers, medical affairs and others to apply cognitive behavioral science evidence and techniques to improve patient outcomes and reduce medication errors.

Dr. Duhig is AbbVie’s representative to the National Academies Science Engineering and Medicine Roundtable on Health Literacy. He is adjunct assistant professor in the department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. Dr. Duhig is adjunct assistant professor at the Health Care Engineering Systems Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
For the past 15 years, Dr. Duhig has led cross-functional research teams in the development of innovative instructional, educational and packaging materials for drug and device products with the goal of optimizing safe and effective use for patients and providers. His work includes extensive human factors research and process improvements to address gaps between clinical safety data and real-world usability. He is a passionate advocate for the use human factors and health literacy to problem-solve the needs of patients not just at the hospital and doctor’s office but at the ‘kitchen table’.
